tools you can use: teleflip

Posted in General at 11:45 pm by Paloma Cruz

Special thanks to Shel Holtz for pointing me to Teleflip.

Teleflip™ started when the founder became increasingly frustrated at
his inability to send text messages to friends’ cell phones
from his PC. It was of course possible, but you had to know
the cell phone provider, the correct domain name and the correct
syntax for the email address. There had to be an easier way….Teleflip™
was born. Teleflip™ was founded in 2003 in Los Angeles,
California.

TELEFLIP™ A FRIEND

The next time you need someone to email you
directions, a recipe, sales information, or maybe just a few
sweet nothings… tell them to TELEFLIP™ it, at:

(yourcellphonenumber)@teleflip.com.

It’s easy. It’s free. It’s for your phone. Try
it now.

email is forever

Posted in General at 9:55 pm by Paloma Cruz

The Houston Chronicle’s TechBlog has a post entitled “E-mail is forever” that covers on how long, and when, email is saved.

Let’s say you send an e-mail from your PC at work to a friend’s PC at her office. The message is saved:

  • Depending on how your company configures e-mail, possibly on your desktop machine.
  • On the corporate outgoing e-mail server.
  • On a backup or archival server, depending on the company.
  • On the incoming e-mail server of the recipient.
  • On any backup servers that company may use.
  • On the PC of the recipient.

There may be other copies made in the chain as well. And if you or the recipient forwards the e-mail, the number of stored copies grows that much more.

There’s a saying smart human resources directors share with employees when warning them about less-than-judicious use of a company’s e-mail system: Never put anything in an e-mail that you wouldn’t want to see on the front page of your hometown newspaper.

That last part bears repeating: don’t put something in an email you wouldn’t want to see on the front page of a newspaper.

reason to want an iPod

Posted in General at 11:52 pm by Paloma Cruz

I’ll admit that the thought of owning an iPod didn’t fill me with lust. And I’ve been known to lust over lesser-known, less-interesting gadgets. An iPod, for whatever reason, just didn’t catch my fancy.

I think it was the idea of spending so much money on something that just had music and photos. Big deal.

An ad on the SciFi channel, however, changed that. Did you know that you can now buy downloads of shows like Battlestar, etc. on iTunes the day after they air? I didn’t. Now I do. And now I want an iPod.

It’s a little late in the game. I’m on the back end of the trend. And I probably won’t buy one… but I do want it.

what not to do as a professional blogger

Posted in General at 1:21 am by Paloma Cruz

ProBlogger posted a list of things to do if you don’t want to be successful as a professional blogger. “9 Ways to Screw Up Your Professional Blog” concentrates on those bloggers who expect to make money directly from their blogs, either in affiliate earnings or advertising. Here’s the shortlist:

  1. Ignore Ad Network Rules
  2. Make Big Claims that Won’t Follow Through on
  3. Start and Give up On Blog Projects As Quickly As Possible
  4. Game Google
  5. Become Obsessed with One element of Blogging and Ignore the Rest
  6. Hide Agendas and Conflicts of Interests from your Readership
  7. Quit Your Job and Go Pro Now!
  8. Plagiarize, Steal and Give as Little Credit to Others as Possible
  9. Blend In With the Crowd

All very good don’t-dos… or rather, very bad things and you must avoid. :-)
